Grin and Bear it

Updated: Aug 3

Nolias Gallery 60 Great Suffolk Street SE1 OBL 1st August - 3rd August 2023

Private View - 1st August, 5-8PM

‘Grin and Bear it’ is an exploration and celebration of our resilience through the grit of day to day life. This exhibition aims to re-frame escapism as perseverance, a collective defiance for the vibrancy of raucous nights and intimate moments of peace. Throughout the exhibition, the stark symbolism of teeth evokes a playful yet disturbing effect. Sets of teeth grin and grimace and sounds of chattering and grinding fill the space. A whole choir of faceless mouths surround you, crying out in discordant harmony and singing words that you can’t quite make out but somehow understand. There is a buzzing atmosphere of cloying discomfort and joyous absurdity, inducing the impulse to both shiver and laugh. A confusing yet arresting experience that perhaps reflects how it feels to ‘grin and bear it’.
